Do Kayak Paddles Float? – Learn the Basics

Before you head out on the water, you may ask the question, do kayak paddles float? It’s an important question to ask as you need to know how careful you need to be with your paddles. If they float, you won’t have to worry about losing your propulsion device to the depths of the lake.

Although there isn’t a definitive answer here, it’s safe to say that nearly all kayak paddles will float. The buoyancy of the paddle depends on what it’s made from as well as a few other factors. However, despite a few exceptions, most kayak paddles to float.

What Are Kayak Paddles Made From?

Despite technological advancements and the development of several synthetic paddles, wood maintains its status as the most popular material for making paddles. Wood is aesthetically pleasing, has a natural flex, it’s light and strong

There is also a lot of variation in the weight of the paddles. This is because different types of wood have different weights. As a result, there can be significant differences in weight from paddle to paddle.

However, there are also synthetic paddles that have been developed over the last few decades. Generally, synthetic paddles fall into two categories.

The first category is the more cost-efficient option. These paddles have plastic blades and aluminum shafts. The most significant benefit of these paddles is that they are more durable. However, there are some significant downsides to these paddles.

Firstly, these paddles are usually heavy and stuff. The aluminum shafts can also get very cold or hot if they don’t have a sleeve. Most people keep these paddles as backups in case of emergency.

The other synthetic paddles are made from graphite and carbon. These materials make for incredibly light paddles, but they are more expensive.

Generally, you will want this type of paddle if you’re racing because they’re so light. However, you need to keep a firm grip because they’re so light that they can be blown away by a strong gust of wind. Furthermore, these paddles are very stiff, which makes for the most efficient paddling.

Why Do You Want Kayak Paddles to Float?

Although your first question might be, do kayak paddles float, you might also wonder why they must float. The significant reason for them to float is, so you don’t lose them.

When you’re out on the water, there’s a lot you need to be aware of. Are there other boats in the area, and is there any debris in the water you need to avoid? You also need to make sure you’re going in the right direction.

While you’re worrying about all those things, it might be easy to forget to keep a firm grip on the paddle. As a result, a strong gust of wind or a big wave could knock the paddle out of your hands. If the paddle were to sink, you’d be stranded in the middle of the lake.

Being in the middle of a lake without a paddle is not a situation you want to find yourself in. You’d have to try to paddle with your hands, which would take a long time. Or you would have to abandon the kayak and swim to shore.

Neither of these situations is ideal, which is why kayak manufacturers make paddles that float. This way, if you briefly lose control of your paddle, you can grab it out of the water without worry. Although these situations are rare, you’ll be thankful your paddle floats if this ever happens to you.

Difference Between Kayak and Canoe Paddles

For those who don’t know a lot about boating in general, they might not have known kayaks and canoes were different things. While they are similar, there are distinct differences between the two. Specifically, the paddles are very different.

Kayak paddles have a blade at both ends and are much longer. Additionally, kayakers will only use one paddle.

Canoe paddles only have a blade on one end, and they’re much shorter. Canoe paddles are basically kayak paddles that have been cut in half.

Kayaks are only equipped for one person to ride. However, canoes can fit one or two people. If two people ride in the canoe, they each will have a paddle, paddling on different sides.

If you ride in a canoe on your own, you use one paddle and alternate paddling on each side. Other than these differences, the paddles are basically the same.

What Do You Need to Start Kayaking as a Beginner?

The first thing you need if you’re going to start kayaking is the kayak. There are several different types of kayaks, including kayaks, that don’t have a cockpit. However, as a beginner, you’ll want a simple recreational boat.

These kayaks will have large kayaks that are easy to climb in and out of. Some of them are also equipped with a foot pedal that operates a rudder. This is useful if the water is unusually choppy.

Now that we’ve answered the question, “Do kayak paddles float?” we can get into which paddle you should choose as a beginner. The first thing you need to remember is that the taller the person, the taller the paddle you’ll need. Typically, you will want a paddle that’s between 210 and 260 centimeters long.

You should also wear a life jacket in case you fall out of the boat. Even good swimmers might panic when they fall out of a boat, so having a life jacket is essential.

Additionally, now that we know the answer to the questions, do kayak paddles float is yes, we can say that if you do fall out, you can hold onto your paddle for a little extra buoyancy.

Furthermore, you’ll want to wear a helmet as a beginner. It’s easy to lose track of your paddle and hit yourself in the head as a beginner. A helmet will keep you from concussing yourself in this situation.

Safety Tips for Kayaking

Although you might not think it, kayaking is one of the most dangerous recreational activities that you can partake in. This is because you are out on open water, and when water is involved, there’s always a risk. However, as long as you take the proper precautions, you’ll never have a problem.

Firstly, you should always consider the weather before heading out on the water. When the weather’s terrible, there will be more waves. This will increase the chance of your kayak capsizing.

You should also invest in the proper clothing, depending on your climate. If you’re in a warm environment, you don’t need to worry too much about clothing. All you need to protect yourself from the sun is to wear some sunscreen.

However, if you’re kayaking in the cold, you should wear a wetsuit in case you fall in the water. A wetsuit will keep you from getting hypothermia after falling in frigid water.

You also need to be aware of how windy it is. This isn’t as important when you’re kayaking on a lake, but if you’re on the ocean, it can make it very difficult to return to shore. It will increase the size of the waves and increase the strength of the current.

It’s also essential to follow the boating rules in your area. The rules are there to keep you safe, and failing to follow the rules could result in an injury to you or someone else. You should also every consume drugs or alcohol while kayaking.

The most important thing to remember is always to wear your life jacket. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been kayaking for a decade or more, you should always wear your life jacket. You never know when it’ll save your life.

How to Break in Football Cleats for a Comfortable Game

It’s common for new players to wonder how to break in football cleats before a game. Cleats are an essential piece of equipment for football players and having them as comfortable as possible affects performance. As a result, learning how to break in football cleats before you play your first game is essential.

After all, football players need a lot of traction to get up to top speed quickly. They also need their cleats to be comfortable so that they don’t have any issues when they start to sprint.

But before you can learn how to break in football cleats, you need to understand what they are in the first place.

What Are Football Cleats?

kicking football

Cleats are a type of shoe worn in many different sports around the world. Soccer, football, baseball, and lacrosse players all wear cleats. There are even variations of cleats for cyclists and track athletes.

Although there are differences between cleats in every sport, they all have similarities. Cleats are shoes with protrusions on the sole of the shoe. These protrusions from the cleats provide extra traction for athletes that would otherwise struggle to push off on soft and slippery surfaces.

Without cleats, football couldn’t be played on turf as easily, at least not at the speed it’s played at right now. Instead, it would need to be played on grass, and even then, athletes wouldn’t get the type of traction they get from cleats.

How Are Football Cleats Different from Soccer Cleats?

As we mentioned above, athletes wear cleats in many different sports. One of those sports is soccer, and cleats worn by soccer players are very similar to football cleats. However, some distinct differences make it necessary to get different cleats for soccer and football.

Different cleat types

gold cleats

Firstly, not every football player wears the same kind of cleats. That's because there are so many positions in football, and players are doing vastly different things depending on their position. The quarterback, linesman, and wide receiver have different skill sets.

There are three different types of football cleats, whereas there is only one type of soccer cleat. Soccer cleats all have a low-cut style that gives players the ability to maneuver and change direction with greater ease.

Conversely, football players have low-cut, mid-cut, and high-tops. High-top cleats provide extra support for the ankle and are preferred by linesman. They provide support for lateral movements needed for the position.

Mid-cut cleats only surround a small portion of the ankle. These cleats provide a little support, but they give the athlete a lot more maneuverability. Defensive backs, running backs, wide receivers, and quarterbacks prefer mid-cut.

Low-cut shoes are the last common cleats worn by football players, but defensive backs sometimes prefer them. This is because they are very light and enable them to reach their top speed quicker.

Weight

You might have picked up on it when we were describing the different cleat types, but soccer cleats are generally a lot lighter than football cleats.

They need to be lighter because soccer players are constantly running throughout the game. As a result, they need cleats that will help conserve their energy.

Toe stud

The last significant difference between football and soccer cleats is the toe stud. Football cleats usually feature a stud near the big toe that is absent in soccer cleats.

This stud gives players a little more grip when pushing off from a hunched position. Since soccer players are usually standing up, the toe stud wouldn’t provide any extra traction.

What Should You Look for in a Pair of Football Cleats?

Before you learn how to break in football cleats, you need to buy a pair first. When purchasing a pair of cleats for your kids or yourself, remember that comfort is more important than cost.

We know that not everyone can afford the most high-end cleats, and you don’t need to buy them. However, you should consider investing a little more in a comfortable pair of cleats. Comfortable cleats will fit better and last longer than unfitted cleats, and as a result, they’ll last longer.

Furthermore, you need to know what position you or your child will play.

If you’re more of a skilled player, lightweight cleats will be best for you so that you can show off your fancy footwork. If you’re a linesman, you’ll need cleats that provide a lot of support.

Finally, you need to remember that cleats are not sneakers. Sneakers are meant to be comfortable and flexible. They are good shoes for going to school and running around with friends.

With that in mind, although cleats should be comfortable, they should not be nearly as flexible as regular sneakers. They should keep your feet in place, and they should fit more like a pair of dress shoes rather than sneakers.

Why Do You Need to Break in Your Cleats?

Although you may be ready for us to explain how to break in football cleats, you also might be wondering why you need to in the first place.

When you purchase a pair of football cleats, they’re going to be moderately stiff, which can be dangerous. That’s because when you’re playing football, your foot will be flexing and bending in ways it doesn’t in everyday life.

If your feet are stuck in position, you’ll be more likely to roll an ankle or hurt your foot. So, learning how to break in football cleats before you step out onto the field is essential.

How to Rack a Pool Table Like a Pro in a Few Easy Steps

Pool is a game with many different variations, but one thing that stays the same is that a game starts with someone racking the balls. As a result, learning how to rack a pool table is essential for any player. Without racking the balls, you can’t play the game at all.

Pool is a game that is loved by millions of people around the world. It’s played in bars across the globe. Additionally, although it’s a popular recreational sport, there are lots of professional players that compete to be the best every year.

Although pool is very well known, it’s possible that you don’t know what it is. So before you learn how to rack a pool table, let's cover that.

What Is Pool?

Before you learn how to rack a pool table, we’d like to make sure you know what pool is, so let’s get into it. Although you may think of pool as a specific sport, it isn’t. Instead, pool is a classification of cue sports played on a table with six pockets that you try to knock balls into.

There are several variations of pool, but the most popular game is eight-ball. Eight-ball is the game you likely play at the bar with friends. But people play several other variations of pool every day.

The History of Pool

Before we teach you how to rack a pool table, we’d like to talk about the history of pool a little bit. We think that understanding pool’s history is essential. So, we’ll share a little bit of that information with you before getting into how to rack a pool table.

There are records of some forms of pool dating back to the 15th century in Northern Europe. Pool originated as a game for royalty. Additionally, it started as an outdoor game that players played alongside croquet.

In the late 1600s, the pool cue was perfected and was more or less made into what we have today. Before then, you would hit the ball with something that resembled a mace. It was also around this time that chalk started to be used to increase friction between the cue and the ball.

Initially, the pockets were hazards that were supposed to make it more difficult for players to strike another ball. However, they were quickly changed to be the targets to hit the balls into.

Furthermore, although pool is now the name that categorizes many cue sports, it originated as a term that referenced betting. Billiard tables were another thing to bet on at horse racing events.

What Do You Need to Play Pool?

We’re almost ready to teach you how to rack a pool table, but there’s another thing we need to cover. We need to discuss what you need to play pool.

If you only plan on playing pool at the local bar, there isn’t anything you need to bring. All the equipment you’ll ever need is at the bar. However, if you want to set up a pool table at your home, there’s some equipment you’ll want to purchase.

Set of Aska L2 Billiard Pool Cue Sticks, 58" Hard Rock Canadian Maple,...

  • 5 (Five) Pool Cue Sticks Set, One of Each - Black 21-Ounce, Blue 20-Ounce, Brown 19-Ounce, Green 19-Ounce, Red 18-Ounce.
  • Cue Length is 58" (standard pool cue length). Canadian Hardrock Maple 29" Shaft.
  • Stainless Steel 5/16x18 Joint

You will obviously need the pool table, the cue sticks, and the balls, but there are a few other things that you’ll want to purchase.

Firstly, you’ll want to get a pool cue case. This isn’t essential, but having a little extra protection for your pool cue could save you money in the long run.

Additionally, getting some pool cue cleaner is necessary. Pool cues get dirty quickly, especially when you use chalk on it frequently. As a result, getting some pool cleaner will keep your cue from getting gross over time.

Iszy Billiards Pool Table Billiard Ball Set, Marble/Swirl Style

  • Grade A deluxe quality - 2 1/4" regulation size and weight
  • Made of polyester resin - 6 ounce balls Marble / swirl style makes a great addition to a table
  • Price shown is for full set of balls including cue ball

You’ll also want hand towels available to you if you’re taking the game seriously. It’s easy for your hands to get sweaty when playing, and this can hurt your game. Having hand towels to wipe off your hands will undoubtedly be useful.

Lastly, if you’re playing in competitions, you’ll need some sort of pocket marker. In eight-ball, you need to call your pocket before you sink the eight ball.

Although in many situations you can get away with calling it verbally, having a pocket marker will settle any disputes you could have before they start. It’s also a rule of the American Pool Association for players to use a pocket marker.

How to Play Pool

As we mentioned earlier, there are several types of pool. As a result, before you can learn how to rack a pool table, you should know how to play the game. Here we’ll discuss five of the most popular types of pool.

American-style eight-ball

In this type of pool, the players use the standard 16 balls used in most games. One player breaks the balls. Once a player gets a ball into a pocket, they are assigned either stripes or solids, depending on which type of ball they got in the pocket.

Once the ball types are assigned, the players alternate shooting until one player gets all their balls into the pockets. If you get a ball in a pocket, you get to take another shot.

The one exception is the eight ball. The eight ball does not count as one of the solid balls. Instead, players pocket it last.

Once a player gets all their balls in, they need to sink the eight ball to win. If a player sinks the eight-ball before this, they lose immediately.

Straight pool

Straight pool is one of the variations of pool that takes the longest. In this game, the players try to get any ball on the table into a pocket. Players need to call the ball and pocket when they take a shot.

Each ball a player sinks is worth one point, and games are played to 100 or 150 points. As a result, the balls need to be re-racked several times in a game. This makes learning how to rack a pool table essential for straight pool.

Carom

Carom is very different from many other types of pool because there are only three balls. There is a white cue ball for each player and one red ball. Additionally, you play Carom on a pocketless table.

The goal of the game is to hit your ball off the red ball and your opponent’s cue ball in one shot. How many points you need varies from game to game, but the most common number of points to win is 50.

Snooker

Snooker has 22 balls in total. There is a cue ball, 15 red balls that are each worth one point, and six differently colored balls with an increasing number of points.

A snooker table is significantly larger than a standard pool table. It measures out to be 12 feet long and 6 feet wide. However, it still has six pockets like a standard table.

A game of snooker starts by the players pocketing any red ball. They then try to pocket the other numbered balls in ascending order. The player with more points at the end of the game wins.

English billiards

The final game we’ll be looking at is English billiards. This is another game where there are only three balls in play. There is a white cue ball, a yellow cue ball, and a red object ball.

When playing English billiards, there are three ways to score. Firstly, you get two points when a cannon happens. A cannon is when your ball hits both other balls.

Hitting your opponent’s ball into the pocket is also worth two points. Finally, hitting the red ball into the pocket is worth three points.

The player with the most points wins the game. The points can be different from game to game, but typically players will play to 300 points.

Learn How to Rack a Pool Table like a Pro

Now that you have a good understanding of pool and many of its variations. It’s time to learn how to rack a pool table. The first thing you do in any game of pool is rack the table, so it’s an essential skill to learn.

Eight-ball game

In an eight-ball game or any game that uses the standard 16 balls, you start the game by racking all the balls except the cue ball. You begin by placing the one-ball at the front of the rack. The front is also called the apex.

Next, you need to ensure that the eight-ball is at the center of the rack. The center is the third row from the top.

Once the eight-ball is in position, you should make sure that the bottom two corners are a stripe and a solid. It doesn’t matter which corner is which, but they need to be different.

Then you can place the rest of the balls in the rack randomly. It’s a common misconception that stripes and solids can’t touch, but this isn’t true. Stripes and solids can touch each other as long as you follow the instructions above.

Once you place all the balls, you should line the apex up with the middle diamond on the side of the pool table. The diamond should be about a quarter of the length of the table away from the edge. Sometimes the table will have a dot instead of a diamond.

Then, before you remove the rack, make sure you've packed the balls together tightly. Now you can gently lift the rack off the balls. If you’ve done this successfully, you’ve learned how to rack a pool table correctly.

Nine-ball game

Nine-ball games are rare, but if you ever play one, you’ll need to know how to rack a pool table for this game. Firstly, you’ll need a diamond-shaped rack instead of the usual triangle.

Like in the eight-ball game, you should place the one-ball at the apex of the rack. However, instead of the eight-ball, the nine-ball should be at the center. You can then set the rest of the balls in the rack randomly.

If you’ve followed the instructions above, you’ve successfully learned how to rack a pool table for a nine-ball game.

Get Started Playing Pool Today

Now that you’ve learned how to rack a pool table, you can get started playing pool today. You won’t need to waste time figuring out how to rack the balls every time you go to the bar. This way, you can spend more time playing and less time trying to figure out the rules.

How to Play Lacrosse: What You Need to Know to Get Started

Lacrosse is a sport that is often forgotten about internationally because it isn’t as popular as soccer, basketball, or baseball. As a result, not many people learn how to play lacrosse. However, many might enjoy the sport if they ever had the opportunity to play.

Lacrosse is a free-flowing game where each team is trying to score on the opposing team’s goal. Although hockey doesn’t stack up to soccer internationally, both are way more popular than lacrosse worldwide.

It’s a strange phenomenon because lacrosse is like both those sports, so you’d think it would at least compete with hockey in terms of popularity.

Since lacrosse isn't as well known as many other sports, many kids are growing up without even thinking of it as an option to play.

However, many of the kids would have lots of fun with it if they ever learned how to play lacrosse.

What Is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is a team sport. Players use sticks with nets on the end to try to get a rubber ball into the opposing team’s net for a goal. Since it’s a free-flowing game, lacrosse is a very athletic sport, and it’s a great test of speed and endurance.

The History of Lacrosse

Before you learn how to play lacrosse, we think you must learn a little bit about the history of lacrosse. Lacrosse is one of the oldest sports in the world and the oldest in North America. Additionally, learning a bit of the history may give you a greater appreciation for the sport as a whole.

Origins

The first people to play a form of lacrosse were Native Americans in what is now the United States and Canada. Before official rules were established, it was common for hundreds of players to be on the field at a time. Back then, it was known as stickball.

When lacrosse was still known as stickball, the game was much more violent than it is today. Passing was looked down upon because it was seen as cowardly to try and dodge an opponent.

It was also relatively common for players to die in the giant mob of players that surrounded the ball as it slowly made its way down the field.

Early on in Europe

Although lacrosse dates back further in North America, there are accounts of lacrosse that dates back to the mid-1600s in Europe. And although there isn’t evidence that the reports of lacrosse back then are the exact same sport of what exists today, they were certainly similar.

However, a more modern version of lacrosse was brought over to Europe in the early 1800s by a missionary who spent time in Montreal in Canada. The missionary spent so much time playing lacrosse that it interfered with his attendance at church.

The first game between anglophones and Native Americans took place in 1844. Then in 1856, the first lacrosse club was created, the Montreal Lacrosse Club.

The club wasn’t what you’d think of as a professional league today, but it was organized. In fact, the club hosted a match between two indigenous teams when the Prince of Wales visited Montreal in 1860.

Becoming a modern sport

Within one month of the Prince of Wales’ visit to Montreal, a young dentist named William George Beers wrote down the first set of written rules for lacrosse.

That made it possible for someone to officially learn how to play lacrosse for the first time. Before this, there were no written rules, and they would change from game to game.

Additionally, Beers changed the ball from a deerskin one to a hard rubber ball. As a result, Beers is now known as the father of lacrosse.

In 1867, lacrosse made its first official appearance in Europe when Captain W.B. Johnson organized an event in London. The event included 16 paid players from Kahnawake and amateur players from the Montreal Lacrosse Club. There were 2 subsequent tours in 1876 and 1883.

The place where lacrosse is the most popular worldwide is Canada. Although Canada is known for its love of hockey, there is a lot of love for lacrosse. It hasn’t reached the height of hockey, but it is popular enough that in 1994, it was named the national summer sport of Canada.

The biggest lacrosse league in the world is the National Lacrosse League or NLL for short. It was founded in 1986 and currently consists of 13 teams. There are five teams based in Canada and eight in the United States.

Before you learn how to play lacrosse, you need to purchase the equipment. If you don’t want to play in a league and only plan on playing recreationally, the only equipment you need is a stick and ball. However, if you want to join a league, you will need some more stuff.

Firstly, a helmet is an essential piece of equipment for any lacrosse player. Lacrosse is a dangerous sport where you can get hit in the head by a stick or ball easily. As a result, a helmet is essential, and you won’t be allowed to play in any league without one.

Furthermore, a mouthpiece is vital for protecting your teeth. The last thing you want is to have your teeth knocked out because you didn’t wear one.

Additionally, you will need protective gloves to keep your hands safe every time an opponent tries to steal the ball from you. All players are also required to wear shoulder pads, arm pads, and rib pads. All players also wear protective cups and athletic supporters.

If you plan on being the goalie, you will also need a throat and chest protector. The helmet you wear also may have a slightly different design than the other players.

Now that you have some background knowledge of the sport and know what you need to play, you can learn how to play lacrosse. Here we’ll take through the basics of how to learn lacrosse. We’ll discuss the essential skills you need to learn, as well as the basic rules of the game.

What are the essential skills?

There are several skills that you need to learn as a lacrosse player. However, there are four skills than stand out from the rest, cradling, passing, catching, and shooting. We’ll discuss all four in detail, and we’ll also briefly touch on some other skills you should consider.

Cradling

The first skill you need to learn when learning how to play lacrosse is how to cradle the ball. Cradling is the equivalent of dribbling basketball or soccer. You cradle to control the ball and make it difficult for your opponent to knock the ball out of your stick.

To learn how to cradle, you first need to know how to hold the stick properly. If you’re right-handed, your left hand should be an inch or two from the bottom of the shaft, and your right hand should be about four inches from the head. If you’re left-handed, then you do the same thing but reversed.

Now that you’re holding the stick correctly, you can learn how to cradle the ball. To practice cradling, place the ball in the pocket of your stick. Then move your wrist in a curling motion to move the ball back and forth.

You should start by practicing standing still, but when you feel comfortable, you can start practicing while running around.

The best place to start practicing is in front of the mirror because you’ll be able to see what you’re doing, and more importantly, what you’re doing wrong.

When cradling, you should curl your dominant wrist as far is it can go inward. Once it has gone as far as it can go, bring it back out, and bring your arm to the starting position. If you managed to keep the ball in the net, then you’ve completed your first successful cradle.

Keep practicing and try to get as many cradles in a row as possible. It’s essential to practice this skill because all skills in lacrosse depend on you being able to cradle the ball.

Passing

Passing is a crucial skill to learn in lacrosse. You use it to catch your opponents off guard, and as a result, players pass the ball hundreds of times a game.

To pass the ball, you should lower your dominant hand to about midway down the shaft. Then you should bring the shaft behind your head. However, you need to careful not to hit yourself in the neck.

Once the stick is behind your head, flick the wrist of your dominant hand and pull your bottom hand towards you. Additionally, make sure you follow through with the motion. Following through will give you more power and precision in your pass.

Catching

Learning how to pass goes hand and hand with catching. Catching is the part of lacrosse that requires the most hand-eye coordination. That may sound concerning if you don’t have excellent hand-eye coordination, but you can improve it significantly by practicing.

To catch the ball, you should bring your dominant hand to the top of the shaft. It should be almost touching the head of the stick. That makes it easier to place the stick in a position to catch the ball.

When you catch the ball, you shouldn’t start cradling immediately. Instead, you should loosen your grip so that the momentum of the ball pushes the stick back a bit. That will prevent the ball from bouncing out.

Shooting

You’re never going to win a game if you don’t shoot the ball. As a result, shooting is a critical skill to learn for any lacrosse player. Shooting involves the same basic movement as passing.

To practice shooting, you should practice taking shots at the corners of the goal. It will improve your precision over time, thus allowing you to score easier.

You should also practice bounce shots as these shots can be unpredictable. The unpredictability makes it difficult for the goalie to predict where the ball is going.

Other important skills

When learning how to play lacrosse, there are a few other skills that you should learn. However, these skills you will learn over time as you play the game.

Firstly, you will need to learn how to defend. There are several methods of defending an attacking player, including poke checking and body checking. However, you can’t practice this without playing with other players.

Over time, you’ll also want to improve your ability to read the game. This means that you are improving your ability to know where the ball is going before it gets there. By reading the game correctly, you’ll be able to better position yourself offensively and defensively.

The rules of lacrosse

When learning how to play lacrosse, you need to understand the rules. Lacrosse isn’t the free-for-all it was 500 years ago, so you need to know what you can and can’t do during a game.

Positions

In lacrosse, there are 10 players on the field for each team at a time. There are three attackers, three midfielders, three defenders, and one goalie.

The attackers usually stay on the opponent’s side of the field and are responsible for scoring goals. Midfielders move the entire length of the field, playing offensively and defensively.

The defenders stay on their side of the field and need to defend against attacking players. Goalies remain in the goal and attempt to block incoming shots.

Basic play

The game starts with a faceoff where teams fight for control of the ball. The team then passes the ball around until they can take a shot, or the other team steals the ball. If a goal is scored, another faceoff is taken at midfield.

You should note that attackers cannot enter the opponent’s goal crease, which surrounds the goal.

Timing rules

When a goalie gains possession of the ball, he needs to pass it or move out of the crease in four seconds. If he doesn’t, there is a turnover.

Additionally, once the defense gains control of the ball, they have 20 seconds to get it over midfield. Once the ball has crossed over midfield, that team has 10 seconds to get the ball into the attack area.

Possession and offsides

When either team gains possession, all players can move towards midfield. However, both sides always need three players above midfield and four defenders behind midfield.

A defensive offside takes place when there are less than four players behind their midfield line. There is an offensive offside when there are less than three players above their midfield line.

Penalties

A penalty sends a player to the penalty box for a set amount of time. Personal fouls send a player to the penalty box for one to three minutes, depending on the infraction. However, specific penalties can result in an ejection.

Furthermore, there are technical fouls that do not result in a man disadvantage. However, they do result in a loss of possession. These fouls include offsides and crease violations.

Objective and game time

The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team. At the professional and college level, the game is 60 minutes long. It is broken up into four 15-minute quarters.

However, in high school, the game length is reduced to 48 minutes, with the quarters being 12 minutes each.
