3 Fun Icebreakers for Kids

Icebreakers for Kids

It isn’t only adults who may feel nervous when brought together with people that they don’t really know. The same definitely goes for children too. Much like with adults, there are a variety of different icebreakers that you can use to bring a group out of their shells and have them chatting away and getting to know each other in no time at all.

Getting to know you

If you have a group of children that don’t know each other, then this icebreaker is an ideal way to get them finding out about one another as well as having fun too. Get the children to stand in a circle and grab a bean bag or a soft ball. Start the game by throwing your bean bag or ball at one of the children and ask them a simple question about themselves. “What is your name?” “Do you have a pet?” “What is your favorite color?” These are all great ideas. The children then take turns throwing the item and asking questions of their own. Play for 5/10 minutes depending on the size of your group.

"Lets talk! Bridge the gap. Break the ice." - Debashis Sarmah

There are different ways you can differentiate this activity. For example, you can use a beachball with circular stickers all around the ball. You can have a variety of fun questions on each sticker. The question can include things like “What is your favorite food?” and “If you could be an animal, what animal would you be?” When you throw the beach ball, the child will (hopefully) catch it, and the sticker that is under or closest to their right thumb when they catch it is the question they will have to answer. For even more fun, you can have the kiddos help you create the questions before you start the game as well. The options are truly endless!

The Line-Up

If you have older children then you might want to tailor your ice-breakers for their age range. A good game if you have a larger group has to be The Line-Up icebreaker. This works best with around 6 players per team and mixed ages is ideal. You act as the caller of the game; asking the teams to line up in order of age, first name order, height, birthdays, longest hair, most cousins. The list can go. This encourages the children to learn more about one another and will have them laughing and interacting too.

Just like the previous ice breaker, this ice breaker can be tailored as well to meet the needs of different students. For example, you can have the students do the activity silently, or you can have them practice their writing skills by being required to communicate via writing only. If you are a class teacher, this activity allows you to quickly see who the different students are in your class. This activity is known to bring leaders to the forefront and this can be helpful in allowing you to understand how to continue running your class.

Funny Faces

If you have a smaller group of children, then you might worry that there are less icebreakers that you can use. However, there are some icebreakers that are ideal for smaller groups. Funny Faces is one of those. Ask the children to sit in a circle facing each other. One of the children is “it” and he or she needs to make their funniest face to get everyone else to laugh. They get a point for every person who smiles or laughs. After a set amount of time (say 30 seconds) they then need to wipe their funny face off and pass it to the next child. This is great fun and is likely to have even the grown-ups smiling. These are just some great ideas when it comes to ice-breakers for kids; ideally it is important to have them smiling, laughing and learning about each other, all without even realizing it.

These are some of the best icebreakers for kids. Want more icebreaker ideas?

Two Player Games for Kids: Best and Most Exciting Ones

Parents all over the world are fighting the same fight: getting their kids off their devices while still allowing them to have fun. Not only is too much time on the TV, iPad, or mobile device detrimental to their sleep and eyesight, they're also not learning any beneficial social skills.

Board games, card games, and other fun activities may be a great substitute, as they often engage children's minds while encouraging social development. Unfortunately, many of the classic games are just too slow-paced for modern kids' tastes, and they quickly revert to the glowing screen.

However, there are some game manufacturers out there that are tackling this problem with innovative, exciting, and engaging new games specially designed for modern kids. So, if you find your kids quickly growing bored of Monopoly and Yahtzee, these might be the games to save the day (and your sanity).

Though most parents would be happy just to have their kids playing nicely and off the television, there are some two player games for kids that have educational or mentally stimulating effects.

One such game is Q-Bitz, a unique pattern-based game that helps children practice symmetry, quick thinking, and visual acuity. Though it doesn't necessarily require math, the spatial reasoning practice a child gets with Q-Bitz has proven beneficial enough to put the game in classrooms around the country.

Q-Bitz is for two to four players, ages 6 and up. There is, however, a Q-Bitz Jr. for younger kids who might want to get in on the fun. Created by the highly-regarded manufacturer Mindware!, the game has earned multiple awards, including the Parent's Choice Gold Award and the Major Fun Award.

Just because a game has been around for 30+ years doesn't mean that it can't still provide hours of entertainment for the kids of today. That is the case with First Orchard, a traditional German game geared toward kids as young as two.

Unlike most two-player games for kids, which usually feature some sort of competition-based gameplay, First Orchard puts more of a focus on teamwork. This cooperation helps kids learn valuable social skills, understanding of rules, and color recognition.

Most younger kids will find the gameplay fun and exciting thanks to the hand-sized wooden “fruit” that the kids need to “pick” before it's eaten by the hungry raven. While some older kids might still have a good time playing, First Orchard is best suited to kids between the ages of two and six.

Pros
  • A classic, tried-and-true children’s game

  • Perfect for ages as young as two

  • Fun and team-oriented

Cons
  • Older kids may find it too simplistic

  • Quite a large game with big pieces

  • HILARIOUS RESPONSES - Includes 40+ Egg-Mazing puns and sound FX that will "CRACK you up!".

Extreme Egg Toss is a new twist on “Hot Potato” that will provide hours of safe, plush fun for kids ages three and up. Best of all, the game talks to kids as they play, increasing engagement and making the entire experience more fun for everyone. Of course, as this is a game that requires throwing, limiting the location of playtime is a must to protect household items from damage.

Using smart sensors built into the soft plush “egg,” the game can tell the difference between how hard or soft a child catches it, and will tell them when they've “cracked the egg” and lost the game. Plus, as the entire unit is machine-washable, this is a game that can help get kids outside and active.

For parents who want two-player games for kids that build both excitement and encourage physical activity, this is a great choice.

Pros
  • Interactive and exciting

  • Talks to kids as they play

  • Machine-washable plush toy

Cons
  • Parents may find the voice annoying

  • Could lead to household accidents

Emojinks Emoji Card Games for Families - Fun Card Game for Kids Emoji...

  • Value Pack, 2-in-1 Emoji Card Game, Beginner And Advanced Levels
  • Emoji Party Card Game
  • Helps Develop Identification Of Feelings And Emotions, Promotes Turn Taking

Another lightning-quick card game that kids will love, Emojinks! uses familiar emoji images to create a fun match game that can be enjoyed by two or more players.

One of the things parents seem to like about Emojinks! over similar card-based games is the practice it gives kids in identifying emotions and symbols. The game comes in two levels—Easy and Advanced—and assists kids in areas like coordination and turn taking.

Perhaps the best part about Emojinks! is the clever use of images kids see on phones and other devices. While they certainly won't see it as a substitute for endless texting and YouTube videos, the faces and shapes will at least give them something to do with all their emoji knowledge.

If you're looking for a game that's perfect for parties and suitable for virtually all ages, this is one that will see a lot of use.

Pros
  • Fast-paced gameplay

  • Fun, familiar images

  • Great for parties and travel

  • Lost cards will ruin the game

Qwirkle is another game from the people at MindWare that is not only fun to play but also secretly educational. Especially when it comes to younger players, this game is designed to help develop strategic planning skills, tactical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Best of all, the game has received a range of awards, including the Major Fun Award, Mensa Select Award, and Parents' Choice Gold Award.

Though it only takes two to play, Qwirkle can be enjoyed by up to four players, which makes it perfect for parties, sleepovers, and family game nights. Using the provided blocks, players are tasked with building lines by matching colors or shapes. The more complex the combinations, the more points they score!

Monopoly Deal Card Game

  • New Monopoly Deal card game that is moving through Family Game Nights everywhere
  • Collect 3 complete property sets but beware of the Debt Collectors, Forced Deals and Deal Breakers
  • If you are looking for a fun family/friend game, this is it

Monopoly is a classic, but it can take hours to play, even with two people. Monopoly Deal solves this problem by dramatically speeding up gameplay to around 15 minutes.

Using cards instead of pieces, kids and adults alike can compete with each other in a lightning-fast contest of property swapping and rent raising. Not only is it more exciting than the traditional game, but it's formatted in such a way that it will keep younger children engaged despite the lack of flashy photos and colors.

If you're looking to introduce your kids to an old favorite with a new twist, Monopoly Deal is an excellent example of a modern update done right.

Pros
  • A faster approach to a classic game

  • Teaches strategy and friendly competition

  • Can play well into adulthood

Cons
  • Property cards could go missing

  • Younger kids may not be interested

Sequence Game

  • Play a card from your hand, and place a chip on a corresponding space on the game board - when you have five in a row,...
  • Each player or team tries to score the required number of five-card sequences before their opponents.
  • Easy enough for kids and challenging enough for adults - great for individual or team play!

Sequence is an exciting and imaginative game that is perfect for kids ages seven and up. Though it is easily played with two players, as many as 12 can join in the fun, which makes this a perfect option for family game nights or sleepovers.

Using a combination of cards, colored chips, and a game board, players are tasked to use a combination of luck and skill to build sequences from the cards they draw. The catch? Each card has two corresponding spaces, so players need to choose wisely to win.

All in all, it's great fun and a wonderful way to build skills like strategy and critical thinking. There is also a version for younger children (Sequence for Kids) as well as specialized educational versions like Sequence Numbers and Sequence Letters.

Pros
  • Can be played by a wide range of players

  • Builds STEM skills

  • Lots of specialized versions

Cons
  • Lots of pieces and cards

  • Not travel-friendly

Czech Games Codenames

  • For 2 8+ Players
  • 15 minute playing time
  • Age 14 and up

It's no secret that older kids are among the hardest to motivate when it comes to playing games instead of playing on their phones. Luckily, there's an award-winning game for teenagers that's so engrossing, it will keep them busy for hours.

Suitable for two to eight players, Codenames is a fast, fun, and challenging. Participants play spymasters who know the secret identities of various undercover agents and must contact them all before their competitor. To keep things fun, there both an “assassin” and “double agent” card which can dramatically change the game.

Though Codenames deals with slightly-adult subject matter, it's all portrayed in a humorous and engaging way. Obviously, enough parents have deemed it suitable for the game to earn a stack of accolades, including being dubbed the world's #1 Part Game.

5 BEST FANTASY FOOTBALL TROPHIES

5 BEST FANTASY FOOTBALL TROPHIES

Fantasy football season is one of the most exciting times of the year. Whether it’s your family, friends, or coworkers, there is plenty of trashing talking to be involved. Most fantasy leagues have some sort of prize for the winner and your league should too. The easiest way to manage the purchase of the trophy is to make the fantasy football league manager responsible for picking out the award. The league manager collects the money (up front) and has the freedom to pick whichever award he deems suitable for the league. Too many opinions can lead to a lot of wasted time.

Fantasy football trophies make great league prizes. I like them so much because I can put my trophy where everybody can see it. If you simply win money it is instantly out of site. If you are playing with coworkers, you can put the trophy in your office. Every time somebody stops by your office they can see that you were the champion that year. Sometimes I even like to mention it just in case they didn’t get a chance to see it. Do your friends stop by your house often? Make sure your trophy is out for them to see. Put it on the mantel or close to the television. Put the trophy in your game room where your friends and you like to gather.

Below you are going to find the best fantasy football trophies available. These trophies are all available on Amazon and are all highly ranked. You will be able to easily see the comparison chart to make an educated decision when it comes to purchasing the right fantasy football trophy for your league. Make sure you know whether you want a perpetual fantasy football trophy or not.

DECADE AWARDS FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPION MONSTER TROPHY

best fantasy football trophies

The winner of your fantasy league can show off their fantastic decision making skills with this winner’s trophy from Decade Awards. The best part about this trophy is that you can choose to purchase it with an engraved plate. The engraving can say anything that you want it to, whether it’s the winner’s name, the league’s name, the season, and/or the winner’s team name.

This trophy is the perfect size for any desk, shelf, or anywhere that you want to show it off! It is 6.5 inches tall, with a gold finish plate of 2.5 inches by 0.75 inches. As for the engraving plate, you can enter up to 3 engraving lines with up to 30 characters and spaces per line.

This is definitely a trophy that all players in the league will want to work hard to earn! It will look amazing throughout the entire year, until the next season when everyone will compete for it again. The trophy is durable and long-lasting, so you can pass it down season to season for generations to come.

THE ULTIMATE CRYSTAL FANTASY FOOTBALL TROPHY

This is a solid fantasy football trophy. It weighs roughly 2.4 lbs and stands nearly a foot tall. It is made out of solid K-9 crystal. Its width is 2-5/8” wide.

This can be used as a perpetual trophy. You can literally engrave all over the trophy except for on the football itself. This trophy looks good on your desk or on your mantel. It’s not made of cheap resin or plastic like some of the other fantasy football trophies being sold. This has the higher end feel to it.

FANTASY FOOTBALL FFL SILVER TOWER TROPHY

This is a solid fantasy football trophy. If you are looking for durability this is the trophy for you. It is made out of poly resin and comes in at 9-1/2” tall. It weighs 1.5 lbs. It’s made out of poly resin. This trophy even has the option to be mounted to a base.

What I like about this trophy is that it shines. When you put it in your trophy case or up on the mantel the light just seems to beam off it. The FFL logo on the front is nicely made and doesn’t seam cheap or tacky. Any fantasy football winner would be happy to receive this as a fantasy football award.

THE GOLD MINE OF PERPETUAL FANTASY FOOTBALL TROPHIES

Now this trophy is a site to see. Coming in at nearly 24 inches tall it’s going to be one of the biggest fantasy football trophies you see. With the massive size comes a hefty price tag, but who cares. When you split it up between the ten to twenty fantasy football players in the league it turns out to be mere peanuts for this beauty.

This perpetual trophy has 12 engravable plates on the 10” x 3” bottom base. Each plate will allow you to engrave 20 letters and 3 lines. The plates can easily be adjusted by removing the two little screws holding them to the base. If you wanted to secure more plates to the backside of the trophy, I don’t see a problem with that.

On top of the trophy you will find a monster holding a football. To me this is the most tacky part of the trophy and it’s biggest downfall. The rest of the trophy is impressive. In addition to the monster carrying the football you will find the word “champion” and two football secured next to the monster. These are great additions.

This trophy is going to require some minor assembly. The manufacture ships this trophy unassembled to prevent damage during shipping. It will be well worth the time it takes to assemble it. Heck, you could even have the loser of the fantasy football league assemble it for the winner.

ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK FANTASY FOOTBALL TROPHY

I like this trophy because it represents what fantasy football is all about. The design is simple but it works. It’s got a sleek black base. The figure on the top is a bronze metallic color. The figure is a quarterback sitting in a chair holding a football.
This is a perpetual fantasy football trophy as well. What’s nice is you can have it customized when you purchase it through Amazon. They can put your league name on the trophy and put the previous 4 years winners on it. This trophy stands 12 inches tall and has a plastic base. It’s a little more top heavy than other trophies but it shouldn’t be an issue.

Overall this would be a great fantasy football award for your league.

There you have it, 5 of the best fantasy football trophies available. Hopefully you have found this helpful and you are now equipped to buy the fantasy football trophy that is right for your league. The bigger and more expensive the award the more intense the league can get. You might also consider getting afantasy football loser trophy.  This trophy is given to the person in last place. This will help keep everybody fighting until the very end.

6 Reasons Why Kids Should Join Fitness Classes

Kids love physical activities. Given the chance to do whatever they want, they would rather run around and play. It is natural for kids to be energetic and playful. There are kids though who are more socially awkward. They would rather stay home watching TV instead of playing with friends. There are other kids who prefer to read books instead of doing physical activities.

As parents, it is important that you help your child gear towards holistic development. At a young age, kids will start to show their skills and talents. You have to be supportive in whatever it is that they want to achieve. At the same time, you also need to teach them to diversify their activities. If they show no interest in physical activities, you need to help them understand its importance. Physical activity can come in many forms – one of which is through enrollment in structured youth fitness classes. These classes allow for same age interaction, while incorporating energy-demanding movements that are fun for kids to perform.

You don’t have to worry that they are too young to join these classes. Your kids will find them easy and enjoyable. To back this up - here are 5 great reasons why kids would benefit a lot from joining fitness classes.

1. Being Physically Active Strengthens the Heart

Our hearts are considered as muscles. Just like other muscles in the body, the heart also has to do exercises for optimal performance. By doing physical activities, the heart becomes stronger and more resilient. A healthy heart could easily reduce the risk of heart diseases. In the US, heart ailments are among the main causes of death even at childhood. Exercising also helps remove the excess cholesterol and fat on the child’s blood. It makes the wall of the blood vessels more flexible. For kids who tend to eat anything they want, the absence of physical activities is detrimental.

2. Exercise helps fight childhood obesity

In the US, almost 17% of children between 2 to 19 years old are considered obese. Those who suffer from obesity may develop chronic illnesses as they grow older. Diabetes and heart diseases are among the most common problems. One of the reasons why kids suffer from obesity is because they lack physical activities. When someone is not engaged in physical activities, the body does not burn calories. Worse, those who eat a lot without exercising will keep piling up calories in the body, leading to obesity. Regular exercise plus a balanced diet could be the best formula to fight obesity.

3. The bones become stronger

Kids are at a point in their lives where the bones are still developing. They need to exercise to ensure that bones grow well. When exercised, the muscles tend to be stronger. The same thing is true for bones. Those who don’t engage in physical activities may suffer from weakened bones that could lead to serious conditions like osteoporosis as they grow older.

4. Fitness classes help enhance emotional wellness

Kids also get stressed. You might not notice it because they laugh all the time and they are not exposed to problems as big as adults face. The truth is that they also get stressed when faced with different challenges each day. Exercise helps make them feel more calm and relaxed. The body releases endorphin after exercising which helps them cope up with their emotional problems. Experiencing weight loss and staying fit may also boost the emotional wellness of children.

5. Exercising encourages brain activity

With exercise, the brain works at an optimum capacity. It helps in multiplying the nerve cells and strengthening the interconnections. In short, kids who exercise become smarter. There is greater flow of blood to the brain. There is also improved development of neurons. They also become more focused in school. During mid-afternoon, most kids feel sleepy and tired. Those who do regular exercise remain energetic.

6. It redirects their attention to a more meaningful activity

When kids are not exercising, perhaps they are busy watching their favorite shows or surfing the net. Being addicted to these devices may also affect their sleep. There is nothing wrong in giving them time to play video games or surf the net. The time should be limited though. If they are more engaged in physical activities, they would not have time for less helpful activities.

In short, you have to consider enrolling your kids in structured fitness classes. They will definitely enjoy doing physical activities. These benefits are just a bonus.

Lawn Games for the Entire Family

Summer can pose a problem for families in search for new and fun things to do. So much free time can lead to boredom. Finding fun, inexpensive, and innovative ideas that keep everyone interested is hard to do. Lawn games are a perfect way to get the family outside and to spend time together. With so many options, there is a lawn game for everyone to enjoy.

Lawn Twister

To set up this easy game, begin by painting a “twister board” onto the lawn. It is best to cut a template of a circle out of some leftover cardboard. Use ground marking spray paint on the grass because it washes off easily.

Tug- of-War

This classic game includes the entire family as well as friends or neighbors. Get a long and sturdy rope, and either some colored tape or marker to mark the center of the rope. Split into two teams and begin pulling. One fun twist to the game is extending the rope across either a stream or water sprinkler. Tug-of-War is not only about strength, but it is also a lot of fun, and there are many variations of the game that can be played.

Frozen T-Shirt Race

This game is easy to set up and even more fun to play. To start, grab a single t-shirt for each player and soak it in water. Once it is thoroughly wet, squeeze out any extra water and fold it up. Place all t-shirts in a plastic bag with wax paper in between the different shirts. When they are completely frozen, distribute the shirts. The winner is the first person who can completely unfold their t-shirt and put it on.

Badminton

This is a traditional lawn game that the whole family can play together. The net can be set up in any open space. The only materials needed are the net, racquets for each player, and a shuttlecock.

Water Balloon Toss

Grab five different buckets. Set them up in a line on the driveway or pavement. If different sized buckets are used, place the larger ones closer to the start and the smaller ones at the end. Label the closest bucket 25, then the next 50, 75, 100, and 500. Use filled water balloons to toss into the buckets. The winner is the one that can score the most points.

Bean Bag Ladder Toss

For this game, all that is needed is a step lapper and some bean bags to toss. To start, label each rung of a step ladder with different points. Normally, the top rung will be the highest number. Throw the bags between the rungs to score points.

BAGGO

BAGGO is a classic lawn game that is loved by the whole family. Design a BAGGO board that has a theme that represents the interests of the family. To start, set up the boards opposite from each other. Split the players up into teams of two and give each team four bags. The opponents will alternate the tosses until all of the eight bags are thrown. The team that reaches 21 points first wins the game. Ask friends and neighbors to bring their portable BAGGO boards and set up a BAGGO tournament in your yard.

Jenga

This game requires a little more preparation, but it will last for many summers to come. Buy several 2x4 boards that can be cut into 48 ½ inch pieces. The boards can be cut by hand or at a local lumber yard. After the pieces are cut, sand the edges so each piece is smooth and can be easily slid across the other pieces. To add some creativity and color, paint the ends in different colors. There is no need to seal the wood because it may cause the wood to stick and the pieces will not slide as easily. Once the project is complete, you can begin playing the game. Store the pieces in a garage during wet weather to prevent warping.

Glow-in-the-Dark Capture the Flag

For fun after the sun goes down, try a different take on a classic game. Divide up family and friends into two teams. Use different glow stick colors as the flags for each team. Give each player two glow bracelets which match the color of their flag. The objective is to find the opposite team's “flag” and bring it back to their side. The winner is the team who successfully captures all of the other team’s flags.

Outdoor Bowling

Fill 2-liter soda bottles with water or sand, and use a rubber ball as the bowling ball. Adjust the length of the lane according to the ability and age of the players.

Slide and Toss

Slip and Slide is a yard activity the whole family has enjoyed for many years. To make it into a game that involves scoring points, gather a tarp, duct tape, and Frisbees. To set up the game, cut different shapes into the tarp and reinforce the shapes with the duct tape. Give different point values to the shapes and then hang the tarp at the end of the slip-n-slide. To play, slide down the slide, stand up, spin around four times and throw Frisbees to gain points. The winner is the person or team with the most points at the end of the game.

Blanket Run

This easy and fun game only requires blankets to play. Simply have one person sit on the blanket while the other stands and holds the other end. The winner is the one that can pull their partner across the lawn to the finish line first.

Playground Games

Playground games such as jump rope and hopscotch are fun, too! They can provide hours of outdoor family entertainment and require very few materials.

Final Thoughts

Summer is an exciting time for creating lifelong memories. Summer entertainment does not have to be expensive and should include the entire family. It can be as simple as making bubbles and hula hooping, to creating competitive games. Whichever activities your family chooses to participate in should be fun!
